How the Skip and Daisy program came about.
If it were not for the sharp insight of a mother, Learn to Read with Skip and Daisy could never have been created. While the inspiration for this powerful reading program was born from watching the struggles of a little girl trying to read, it was that girl’s mother, Sonya Nelson, who decided to do what she could to create a solution. Today, Sonya still recalls how it all happened.
For Britnee, it all began in kindergarten where she showed a lot of potential to become an amazing little reader. She did well memorizing the sounds of the alphabet and even earned rewards for being such a quick learner. Then she hit first grade and a teacher who used a method to teach reading known as the ‘whole language’ approach. This method featured a teacher reading to a group of students who would follow along in their books. Once the teacher finished, it would then be a child’s turn to read the story aloud for the group. As the children progressed, they would move up in levels to a new book. Britnee ascended the levels quite fast, amazing her teachers, but her mother did not believe that all was as well as it seemed.
This is when Britnee’s mom began to notice something disturbing: if Britnee had not seen a particular book before, she could not read it even if it was of the same level. Even though Britnee was up in the highest levels of the class as a reader, her mother felt that something was amiss, but the teachers assured her that it would eventually “kick in”.
To test the theory that Britnee was not really reading as she should, Sonya would take a word from one of her books, write it out on paper and ask her daughter what the word said. Britnee would have no idea because once the word was not part of the story, she could not recognize it. This set off alarm bells for Sonya so she went straight to Britnee’s teachers to ask what she could do at home to help her daughter. They gave her no tips or insights, so she began purchasing the major reading products. Those products had boxes filled with flash cards and games with cute pictures, but they had no effect on a second grader like Britnee who didn’t find them interesting. Sonya tried anyway, but there was no real improvement.
At the end of second grade, Britnee’s score on the California Standardized Reading Test put her in the bottom 13% of students her age.
To make matter worse, during the first week of 3rd grade, Britnee’s teacher called. She wanted a conference with Sonya and during the conference she informed her that her daughter was essentially illiterate. This meant Britney had gone from a so-called ‘advanced reader’ to unable to read. Sonya knew she had to find answers fast.
She read and researched constantly until she discovered how effective systematic phonics could be in teaching children to read. She then got certified by a Florida school called Read America so that she could teach reading, giving up her retail business to do so.
It only took 4 months for Sonya to build Britnee into a fluent, confident reader. She decided to use what she had learned to help teach other children to read. That is what Sonya Nelson has been doing ever since.
These days, she looks back on her experience teaching innumerable children how to read and how it actually taught her how simple teaching reading can be once a person understands how to do it the right way. That is why she developed the Learn to Read with Skip and Daisy program: to give you a guaranteed way to turn your child into a successful reader.
